City of Bath

Bath is an ancient city with more than 2,500 years of history, yet it is known worldwide for its unique hot springs. According to legend, Prince Bladud discovered their healing power, and the Romans later developed the city with roads such as the Fosse Way and the remarkable Roman Baths. In the Middle Ages, a Benedictine monastery stood here, which later evolved into the magnificent Bath Abbey that dominates the city today.

Bath’s harmonious Palladian and later Georgian architecture — including the Circus, Queen Square and the iconic Royal Crescent — created the elegant cityscape we admire now. Bath has inspired and been home to many remarkable figures: the novelist Jane Austen, writer Mary Shelley, painter Thomas Gainsborough, novelist Charles Dickens, and astronomer William Herschel, who discovered the planet Uranus while living in Bath. In modern times, the tradition of bathing continues at the Thermae Bath Spa, where visitors can enjoy the city’s natural thermal waters.

All these layers of history, culture, science and art attract visitors from all over the world each year. I am the author of the tour “10 Wonders of Bath”, and during my walk I will bring these stories to life — connecting legends, architecture, famous residents and hidden details that make Bath truly unforgettable.
